2021 USFS Outfitters' Meeting

brett duxbury March 8, 2021

Quick notes from the February 26, 2021 meeting:

  • No Brush Creek race this year (snowpack)

  • No Slalom races this year (COVID/county permitting)

  • No permits required from the Forest Service to boat this year

  • Shore-based river rangers

  • New signage to prevent overcrowding at access points

  • No Keyesville / Granite closures anticipated

The first four points are the same as last year.

The last two raise issues for noncommercial boaters as the managing agencies have tended to favor commercial rafting companies over us when it comes to signage and closures. KRB spoke with USFS and BLM to reiterate our desire for equal treatment with the commercials, and representatives from both agencies were receptive. Specifically, BLM acknowledged the unfairness of providing access for commercials at Keyesville & Granite as noncommercial boaters seeking simple access to the river were kept out. USFS acknowledged that noncommercial boaters require some kind of parking (we don’t have buses) and equal access to any zones signed for loading.

If any access problems arise this year, let KRB know.

KRB has launched the “Free the Kern” campaign in opposition to SCE’s quest for a new 40-year license to continue KR3’s diversion of water out of the Wild & Scenic North Fork Kern. All donations are tax-deductible and go towards support of that campaign.
